Welcome back to yet another blog post where I'm going to document some of my favorite lip shades that are perfect for Indian Skin tones. Being a makeup junkie and a lipstick hoarder I feel like giving my quirky queens some super fun colors that will work for them just as they did for me!
Whether you are a fair, medium or a deeper skin tone, the shades mentioned below will complement you as I have listed a variety of tones in one particular shade. Before I list down the lipsticks that I've picked out for this blog post, lets first understand the key by which you can find the type of your skin tone and a lot more related to choosing the right shade:
Understanding Skin Tones:
To pick out the perfect shade for yourself, you need to understand the concept of undertones. Human skin color ranges in variety from the darkest brown to the lightest hues. While very light skin tones will generally have a slightly pinkish undertone, here in India ( and mostly Asian skin tones ) we mostly have yellow undertones, aka olive or gold undertones.
Some of us may be slightly in between being a neutral skin tone. Here are some old school methods that can help you find your undertone in no time:
- Checking Your Veins
Push your sleeves up right now and look at the veins of your wrist.
Are they blue or green? If they look more blue, you likely have cool (pink) undertones.
If the veins look greenish, you’re a warm (yellow-gold) undertone.
If they are somewhere between bluish-green and you can't determine on one particular shade, you're most likely a neutral undertone.
-Identify with a Celebrity
Find a celebrity you identify your skin tone with.

-Find Which Colors Look Best on You
Above you can find the actresses with pink undertones spotting cool toned colors like blue, pink, ivory with silver accessories. The ones with yellow undertones are spotting warm tones such as wine, red, brown, yellow with gold accessories. The colors that suit you best will compliment your skin by making it radiant.
Remember your mom saying, "this color looks so good on you?"
Yes, you probably wanna listen to her now to find your undertone!
Determine The Right Shade:
Now that you know your skin tone, there are some basics to determine which shade will suit you best. First thing first, if you are a neutral skin tone, congratulations! mostly all shades of lipsticks will suit you and you don't really have to worry unless you have pigmented lips ( which most of us have in India )
Pink Undertones: stick to cooler colors like baby pink, lip shades with blue or purple tones in them.
Yellow Undertones: stick to warmer colors like orange, reds, browns. Warm toned pinks and reds compliment Indian skin tones beautifully! Cool toned pinks can make you look washed out.
Luckily I'm a neutral skin tone which turns to more yellow undertones when I'm a little tanned during summers. I have listed a few of my go to lipsticks that are suitable for both pink or warm toned skin for summers as well as monsoons. FAMILY OF PINK:
I am not a big fan of cool toned pinks but I do have Maybelline's Eternal Rose as a very moderate pink which is matte in texture and stays all day long on my lips, it suits fair to medium skin tones.
On the other hand, Miss claire SMLC in the shade 17A is a very bright pink just like eternal rose, but a little deeper to suit medium to darker skin tones as well. Here are the swatches:
FAMILY OF NUDES:
Blue Star Meilin in the shade Bistre is the perfect warm nude with hints of orange for fair to medium skin tones. Even if you have pigmented lips, this color shows beautifully and makes you look radiant.
Miss Claire SMLC in the shade 17 is a deep brown shade suitable for skin tones on the darker side rich in olive undertones. Both of these shades work great for a brown-nude look which is so on trend these days. Here are the swatches:
FAMILY OF MAUVE TONES:
NYX Liquid Suede Soft Spoken is by far my most beloved shade. This is such a pretty color for Fair to medium, or even a little deeper skin tones than that. It appears as a grey-pink color and finishes off as a very subtle mauve shade on Indian pigmented lips. The texture is so rich and smooth, I can go on and on with this.
Street wear color rich ultra moist lipstick in the shade Spell Bound is another deep mauve tone for deeper skin tones and complement our lips very well with its satin soft finish, It works as an MLBB(my lips but better) shade for deeper skin tones. Though it might appear a little different-like a brick color if you have neutral lips with no pigmentation at all, but that is a rare case. Here are the swatches:
Here are the lip swatches of all the lip shades mentioned. I am a neutral skin tone so whichever shade looks a little dark will suit skin tones darker to me very beautifully.
So that is it for this blog post. I have tried to include all the possible light shades that work great in summer and monsoon season. Also, these shades are best for college going and working women who do not need a lot of color on their lips but just a hint of jazz.
